Service-Learning Students from the University of Missouri

The University of Missouri’s Office of Service-Learning encourages students to get involved in the community through various programs and projects. Each year the Office of Service-Learning helps more than 3,000 students get involved in the Columbia area. Service-Learning students partnered with Boys and Girls Club of the Columbia Area help children during “Power Hour” where the children work on their homework. They also help with things like cleaning as well as setting up and running special events.

First Position

First Position is a beginners dance class for girls ages 7 -11. It is held on Mondays from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. It introduces dancers to the basics of proper stretching, beginner ballet, jazz & sass, modern dance, and hiphop/cheer routines.  After practicing hard for months they will hold a holiday performance which the parents, staff, and club members will be able to watch.

Columbia College Men’s Basketball Team

The Columbia College men’s basketball team started volunteering at the Club in 2011. This partnership is a great opportunity for the team to get involved in the community. The teens go to the Columbia College gym once per month to play basketball with the team. The players make excellent role models for the children. They are a respectful group of men, and the club members are very fond of them.

How You Can Get Involved

Are you or your organization interested in providing a positive experience for young people? Do you like working with youth and seeing the excitement in their eyes, answering endless questions and hearing the sounds of innocent laughter? Then consider becoming a volunteer with Boys & Girls Club of the Columbia Area where you can use your talents and interests to assist young people to grow into responsible and caring adults.
